Stories from the State Hospital Tour
July 5th @ 7 pm - 8:30 pm

hospital.jpg

As the demolition of buildings inside the main Fergus Falls State Hospital complex continues (except for the Memorial Building) and with no interior access allowed, we will do the next best thing by touring the exterior with "Stories from the State Hospital" on Friday, July 5, 7 p.m. Park in the Government Services parking lot and gather at the hospital’s far west side.

Designed by Warren B. Dunnell, the Fergus Falls State Hospital utilized the architectural concepts of mental health pioneer Thomas A. Kirkbride to create a model institution for the treatment of the mentally ill. Kirkbride’s moral management plan included a central administration area flanked by patient wings with setbacks to allow for maximum light and ventilation.

For 118 years the “Castle on the Hill” provided care to people who were largely ignored by the rest of society. Procedures at the hospital mirror the evolution of mental health treatment from the late 19th century throughout the 20th century. Because of this the hospital developed an aura of mystery and legend that dominated the region’s cultural fabric.

With the future of the complex in limbo, it is imperative that we examine the hospital’s history, stories and events. "Stories from the State Hospital" goes beyond the bricks and mortar to keep its history alive.

Admission is $6. For more information call 218-736-6038. Remember, this is an exterior tour only.
