In June, for the first time ever, Douglas County will have its own tour of artist's studios.

After years of opening their doors for an Otter Tail County-led event, local artists will join the Alexandria Art Guild's Art DeTour, a driving tour of 13 studios and 25 artists in and around Alexandria.

"There is so much artistic talent that is right here in Douglas County that unfortunately has been hidden for a while," said guild secretary Karla Mikkelson. "It deserves to be featured."

Artists formed the nonprofit guild more than a year ago to bring more visibility to the visual arts locally. The guild holds monthly meetings and publishes a directory of local artists.

The art tour is set for Friday, June 14, and Saturday, June 15, a weekend that will see about 10,000 visitors in town for trap shooting and more for a fishing tournament.

"We chose the dates very carefully," Mikkelson said. "A lot of visitors to the area are looking for great things to do that weekend."

The guild has worked with the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce and Explore Alexandria to plan the event, and received a small marketing grant from Explore Alexandria, she said.

Several artists will also take part in Otter Tail County's driving tour in July, she said. That one is organized by Battle Lake-based Art of the Lakes group. Begun in 2001, it bills itself as the "largest art crawl in the rural Midwest."
