Oma’s Bread and Bakery
Hailing from Germany, mother daughter duo Annette and Yvonne opened a bistro-style restaurant in Wadena, MN called Oma’s Bread (Oma meaning “Grandma” in German), offering traditional German fare.
Daughter Yvonne found herself in Verndale, MN at the age of 16 as a foreign exchange student. After graduation she planted her roots, started a family and has resided here for 15 years. Annette followed suit 5 years ago and relocated to the Midwest, bringing along her self-taught baking skills to Yvonne and her family. Soon they realized that her European influence needed to be shared with the locals.
They started off by offering their products at farmers markets and quickly gained popularity. Commissions for specialty orders began coming through and after 4 years of making trips to places like Detroit Lakes, Brainerd and even as far as the cities, they quickly outgrew their household kitchen. Yvonne and Annette decided to embark on becoming business owners and with their established reputation, it’s proven a success.
Now, customers make special trips to visit them from places like Duluth and the Twin Cities to enjoy their fresh, homemade, nutrient rich, preservative free foods they’ve provided to the upper Midwest. Here you will find dense European style cakes, sourdough breads, puff pastry, tarts, German-style noodle dishes, quiches, homemade salads and other seasonal foods. They also believe in using local ingredients, so eggs from nearby farms are used in their foods and pastries along with the dairy used in their house made cheeses, yogurts and spreads.
You can also find their presence in places from Alexandria and Detroit Lakes to Sartell and Plymouth. Their success also has them thinking of the future. Master Chef son/brother will be joining them from Germany to help Oma’s Bread grow and offer more German options. Their plans include opening a sister restaurant and offering dinner options as well.
